厦门市工商联于1950年筹备，通过接收旧商会、整组各同业商会，于1953年1月建立，为中华全国工商业联合会的地方组织，厦门市政协组成界别之一。为适应对外开放需要，1988年，厦门市工商联经批准加挂“厦门市商会”牌子。1990年又将“厦门市商会”改为“厦门总商会”。
厦门市工商联（总商会）发扬“爱国、敬业、诚信、守法”的传统，是党和政府联系非公有制经济人士的桥梁纽带，是政府管理和服务非公有制经济的助手，在厦门市经济、政治、文化、社会生活中有着重要影响，为地方的经济发展和社会进步发挥了积极作用。
截至2014年9月，厦门市工商联（总商会）共有同安、集美、思明、湖里、翔安、海沧6个区工商联（商会）组织；会员9982个，其中，企业会员9209个，团体会员117个，个人会员656个，行业组织26个，乡镇商会13个，街道商会24个，异地商会37个。一直以来，厦门市工商联（总商会）认真履行统一战线人民团体和民间商会职能，提高参政议政水平，完善商会服务职能为要求，以鼓励、引导非公有制经济健康发展、非公经济代表人士健康成长为己任。为贯彻十八届三中全会精神，促进厦门市民营经济更好更快发展，厦门市工商联（总商会）积极配合市委、市政府推动《关于促进民营经济健康发展的若干意见》的出台，并承担市民营经济工作领导小组...
